Pastor Laier Museum

Distance: 152.76 Km

In Pastor Laier's original house you can see the exhibition of Pastor Laier's sculptures and paintings from his artistic period from 1936 - 1966.

As early as the 1930s, Pastor Laier made his first cement sculptures, which have since filled the house and garden in Hjallerup.

His art was first exhibited at the autumn exhibition at "Den Frie" in the year 1938 and has since been exhibited at i.a. Charlottenborg in 1970 and Louisiana in 1971-72.

When a bypass was built around Hjallerup in 1967, several of Laier's cement sculptures were cleared of the road and molested.

Several of the sculptures were placed in Tingbæk Lime Mines, where they became inaccessible after a landslide. However, some were dug free in 1995.

"The Mad Priest"

Pastor Laier was ordained a priest in Hjallerup in 1927, at the age of 44.
Laier's sermons were often marked by harsh outbursts against named individuals and institutions. This led to his dismissal in the year 1937. The citizens of the parish wanted him to remain in office, but despite this he had to retire for disobedience.

His harsh and powerful language earned him the title of "the mad priest".
In the year 1936, Pastor Laier and his wife drove down through Europe, where they saw a lot of crucifixes. Here he was inspired and threw himself into the world of art with his very own style.

The first sculpture Laier made was Jesus on the Cross - white and suffering with red blood running out of him. The sculpture was placed outside and created outrage and fascination.
