Behind the wide moat and the meter-thick walls you will find one of Denmark's most beautiful Renaissance castles with the finest, private art collection and the creepiest ghost stories.

The sumptuous east wing in Renaissance style was built between 1587 and 1591. The north wing, where Stygge Krumpen, among others, lived, dates from approx. 1520.

If you join one of the castle's tours, you can hear all the fantastic stories about the castle, the art collection and the owners of the place. Perhaps along the way you can find the blood stain that cannot be washed off? Here you can also hear the story of the domineering lady of the castle, Ingeborg Skeel, who can send chills down the spines of both big and small souls. Maybe you'll even catch a glimpse of her in the barrel-vaulted cellars or in the high tower room!

In the basement under Voergaard Castle, the prisoners used to be locked in the "Rosedonten", and it has not been funny, because there is no window and only one meter to the ceiling.

The art collections at Voergaard Castle are a story in themselves and a great experience. The castle has one of the most valuable and unique private French art collections in Denmark. The collection was brought to Voergaard by the place's last owner: Count Ejnar Oberbech-Clausen, who after a long life in France bought Voergaard back in 1955. Voergaard is still decorated and furnished as it was during Oberbech-Clausen's lifetime.

Denmark's Most Beautiful Manor

In 2018, Voergaard Castle was awarded and hailed as Denmark's Most Beautiful Manor in a vote of Historic Houses. Historiske Huse writes about Voergaard:

"Voergaard is a unique Renaissance building from the 1500th century surrounded by Denmark's widest moat and with meter-thick walls. The east-facing sandstone portal, which you meet after crossing the moat, is the country's most distinguished manor portal, designed as a triumphal arch and decorated with diademed heads, Doric columns , lion heads and Frederik II's monogram."

Experience the castle

The castle is immensely beautiful and worth seeing both outside and inside. Access to the castle is on guided tours. Tickets can be bought on Voergaard's website or in Voergaard's shop.

There is free access to the park with Denmark's widest moat.

Every year in week 29 you can experience Medieval days at Voergaard Castle. Here the time is set back to the year 1533, where you can greet Bishop Stygge Krumpen, musicians, craftsmen and traders as well as a multitude of life, smells and sounds.

Last weekend in November and first weekend in December, the whole family can experience the old-fashioned Christmas atmosphere at Christmas at Voergaard. Here you can see the beautiful salons beautifully decorated and maybe buy a gift to take home from one of the many stalls at the Christmas market.
