Royal Toldkammer & Toldbod Plads

Distance: 133.54 Km

The Royal Customs Chamber in Aalborg was designed by architect Hack Kampmann and built in 1902. Hack Kampmann also designed Marselisborg Castle, Toldboden and the Theater in Aarhus and the Police Station in Copenhagen.

The building is an example of national romantic style with motifs from the Renaissance. It is seen, for example, on the symmetrical facade with the monumental staircase. In addition, many unique details on the masonry and especially the eaves are worth noticing.

The Royal Customs Chamber has undergone a major restoration for a number of years and today appears to be original. The restoration meant that in 2006 the building was awarded by Aalborg Municipality for a beautiful and thorough restoration of one of Aalborg's old valuable buildings, so that it appears beautiful in the cityscape. Likewise, in 2007 the building received the "Praise" award of the year and in 2007 it received the "Facade of the Year award".

Toldbod Plads in Aalborg

The Royal Customs Chamber is located on the new waterfront just a few steps from the streets of Aalborg. Just in front of the Customs Chamber at Toldbod Plads is Denmark's first musical fountain built in 2007. Every day during the summer until week 42, Aalborgers, northern Jutlanders and tourists can enjoy the beautiful fountains that throw water into the air at different tempos. Four times a day - at 12, 15, 18 and 21 - the fountain is spiced with an overture from Georg Friedrich Handel's Water Music, which plays for approx. 3 minutes.

The old waterfront

Historically, since 1556, a customs house has been located in the same place as the Royal Customs Chamber is now. In this place, Østerå emptied into the Limfjord. Østerå was then excavated and made wider and deeper, so that ships could sail all the way up to the large grocery houses, such as Jens Bang's Stone House and Jørgen Olufsen's Farm. From 1872, Østerå was covered piece by piece and in 1897 led around the center and covered.
