The museum in Hammer Bakker is a museum for the Statens Åndssvageforsorg.

The museum in Hammer Bakker tells the story of how conditions have been through the ages for users of the large mental institution.

The mental institution dates from 1916 and when it was at its peak it had 810 users and 600 employees.

By seeing the objects in the museum's exhibitions, visitors get a good sense of the lives of the mentally handicapped in earlier times and how the institution functioned. Protocols, books and a very large collection of images provide a good insight into the daily life of a large institution.

The buildings in the institution area have had different functions over time. Small signs in front of the buildings tell briefly about some of these features before and now. If you want to know more, you can scan a QR code and thereby gain access to a more detailed building function description.
