Melting ice, stones, gravel, clay and sand formed 15.000 years ago what is known today as Jyske Ås, which resounds with tales of the past from the Ice Age - listen, maybe you can sense the faint whisper of captivating stories in the fresh wind.

The turning ridge

Jyske Ås is a hilly ridge formed by glaciers during the last ice age. It stretches over 38 km down through Vendsyssel and has a width of more than two kilometers. 39 of the hill's hilltops are higher than 100 m above sea level, and Knøsen is with its 136 m the highest point in all of North Jutland.

The area around Jyske Ås offers beautiful scenery and unique nature. Here you can experience lush fields, large forest areas, bogs and extensive heathland.

Jyske Ås is not, despite its name, a hill. It was created during the last ice age. The entire terrain around Dronninglund is very hilly. Exciting long dolmens and burial mounds are scattered in the area.

The area has several different, exciting hiking trails and bike routes. In the unique terrain you will experience a rich wildlife and beautiful nature, while you feel the Jyske Ås under the soles of your feet.

Remains from the Ice Age

Over 15.000 years ago, a mighty glacier came gliding from Russia. The ice made its way over the bottom of the Baltic Sea, crawling up over the rock formations of Scania and Halland, where it broke large pieces of solid bedrock. It then dived into the Kattegat, where it pushed large amounts of rock, gravel, sand and clay with it.

In the area that is now Østvendsyssel, the glacier stopped. In cold periods it slid slightly forward, and in heat it retreated until an uninterrupted period of heat caused the ice to disappear in large meltwater rivers. The melting ended about 12.000 years ago, leaving behind the material that the ice mass had engulfed on its way. The clay was carried away by the meltwater and is today seen as large slopes at Bulbjerg, Lønstrup and Nr. Lyngby. The rest lay tangled in ramparts in the sliding direction of the ice southeast / northwest.

Jyske Ås stretches from Dronninglund in the south and approx. 40 km northwest to Østervrå. In the forests on the hill are some of Vendsyssel's highest points. In addition to Knøsen in Dronninglund Storskov, there are in Allerup Hills: Storstensbakken, Voldene and Skelbakken, which are all over 100 meters high. In Pajhede Forest is the 112 meter high Søhedens Bakke.

In the unique and quite unspoilt nature you will find rare flowers and plants like heart grass and wild orchids. A rich wildlife also lives here, and it is possible to get very close to steelworms, forest damage and rare frogs.

The hill is crossed by marked cycle and hiking trails, with accommodation options in primitive campsites.
In Jyske Ås, three large rivers originate: Voraa, which flows into the Kattegat, Uggerby Å, which flows north and empties into the North Sea, and Ryå, which after a winding course ends in the Limfjord a little west of Nørresundby.
