History

Dronninglund Castle was originally a nunnery, as the Benedictines around the year 1100 established Hundslund Monastery, as it was called at the time. Over time, the monastery became both highly regarded and rich and owned over 100 farms, as it was allotted by Queen Margrethe the First.

When Hundslund Kloster came to belong to the crown during the Reformation, the place was subsequently given to several well-known sheriffs. In 1690, Christian the V's queen, Charlotte Amalie, took over the estate and gave it its current name, Dronninglund. Since then, Dronninglund was passed on to others in the royal family, counts and consuls, where several restored and added more to Dronninglund such as the garden.
