Stentinget Byrhøj by Klokkerholm

A little outside Klokkerholm, the landscape is broken here and there by a large number of burial mounds. Here is also a larger historical area called Stentinget.

One of the burial mounds, located in the Stentinget area, is called Byrhøj. The area reminds us that there was another reality right here.

Once upon a time, there was a village on the Stenting with skilled craftsmen. The finds testify that beautiful craftsmanship has been made here, but also that the residents went out and shopped. There are, for example, finds from the Frankish Empire, the Alps and the Roman Empire. In the Viking Age, a not insignificant great man lived here.

The Danish Society for Nature Conservation writes about Stentinget-Byrhøj:

Stentinget Byrhøj has been interpreted as being the remains of the legendary Wendela, the old capital of the old Vendsyssel. It is clear that the area is a burial and settlement from the Late Iron Age and Viking Age. from the Iron Age, where trade and crafts / production have played a significant role despite the distance to the coast. Thus, a number of archaeological finds have been made from about the year 600 up to the year 1100 AD. "

During the excavations (Vendsyssel Historical Museum) in 1989-92, significant finds were made that had not been seen before. Thereafter, the area was covered by a protection around the year 2000. This protection was implemented in 2018 with the help of local citizens under the association "Klokkerholm, Byen i landskabet".

Now you can park the car in the parking lot at the Johanneskort signage on Hellumvej and walk the small walk (approx. 500 m.) Up to Byrhøj. The hike takes place along the pine hedge to the east, sloping in over the field and up on Byrhøj. From here you look down into the burial mound, where you can enjoy your food in the packed lunch house and read more about the area's history.
