Algade in Aalborg

Distance: 133.23 Km

Algade is one of the city's oldest streets and can be traced back to the 1000s. Today, Algade is a shopping street in Aalborg, where you can also visit the underground Gråbrødrekloster Museum by elevator.

Algade is one of Aalborg's largest shopping streets, with a multitude of specialist shops and with an entrance to the department store Salting with Salling Rooftop, where you get a panoramic view of the entire city of Aalborg and the fjord. Here you can also try the nerve-wracking skywalk at a height of more than 30 metres.

A historic city

Aalborg has always been changing. The city has existed for more than 1000 years, and a lot has happened since the first Vikings settled in what is now Algade. Traces from the past can tell us something about how the people of Aalborg built houses and what they did for a living. You can get an insight into history by visiting the underground museum, Gråbrødrekloster Museum, which is right next to Salling. Here you just have to use the elevator and you will arrive three meters underground, where the museum is located.

Algade is one of the city's oldest streets

The street arose on a naturally created chalk isthmus that lay suitably high above the waters of the Limfjord. The part of Algade, which is closest to the location of the department store Salling, is the oldest. Finds on the site indicate that Algade was developed with its current extent and location as early as the 1100s. In the oldest part of the street, you will also find Budolfi Church, which was built in the 1300th century. At the opposite end of Algade you will find the cozy Nørregade, which has undergone a major renovation.

Helmet stable

As a small side street to Algade, exists Helmet stable, which is one of Aalborg's cosy, old streets with cobblestones and small charming houses. The street was laid out in the 1600th century and most of the small houses are 2-300 years old. The street is definitely worth a visit.
