In 1906, Ferdinand Salling opened the first manufactory store in Aarhus. This new store had to be paid for with cash and therefore could not be purchased on credit, which was otherwise customary at the time. Ferdinand also bought large consignments of goods at home and sold them at a discount or at a good price, through which the fixed assortment which the customers were also used to was settled.

However, the business grew explosively when Ferdinand's son, Herman Salling, took over the business in 1946, where the first thing he did was give the buildings an overhaul. In the following decades, things went well for Herman, he opened, among other things, Denmark's first Føtex in Aarhus. But the true revolution took place in 1964, each Herman Salling took his business north and opened a Salling in Aalborg.
